8 Situations in which you should turn off your autofocus

Why should you manually focus? Authorized question, I think. The autofocus on your camera is actually very handy. There are some real situations, however, where you should leave your fingers off the autofocus.
But only a brief info at the edge: Did you know that until the mid-70s there was no autofocus? Some of the most famous pictures have thus also been created without an autofocus. What we can do, we can!
So when is it useful to do without the autofocus?

# 1 IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH LIGHT

You may know the problem. Light is a defect, you want to photograph a great motif, press the trigger and the engine of your car focus only from one end to the other. I think we agree that this is no fun.
My suggestion is thus: turn off autofocus and take the thing into your own hands.

# 2 IF YOUR SUBJECT HAS TOO LITTLE CONTRAST

If you are standing in front of a gray solid wall and try to take a picture, you will notice why little contrast can become a problem.
Because your camera thinks "This looks all the same. What the hell is the nonsense? "And does not focus on what you want from her. And it does not matter if you have a lot of light outside or not.
Monochromatic surfaces, but also a continuous blue sky can then become a problem. Also here it is useful to simply switch off the autofocus.

# 3 WHEN THE WEATHER IS MODEST

Modest weather is always stupid, but can also lead to really great photos.
The problem is often, however, that your autofokus with bad weather rather not so good clear. If it is very snowy or foggy, for example, your autofocus does not know what to focus on.
In doubt your motif disappears somewhere blurred behind the snowflakes. But hey, some snowflake in the foreground is razor sharp. If you do not want to risk it, simply set your autofocus and set it manually.

# 4 WHEN YOU PHOTOGRAPH PORTRAITS

If you make a portrait of someone, then a precise focus is very important. Just imagine, the focus point is on the ear. Eyes, nose and mouth are slightly blurred. Could look stupid.
We do not want this. In the best case, we will exactly determine the point at which the attention of the beholder is drawn.
To make sure we do not leave it to chance, we prefer to set our autofocus and determine the focus point manually.

# 5 IF YOUR SUBJECT MOVES FAST

Things or people who move fast are not the simplest motives. Especially if you want to get it sharp.
Even with the continuous autofocus you often stand stupid. To exhibit the autofokus is really a real alternative.
Give it a try. At the next marathon in your city, you grab your camera and preferably your tripod, stand by the wayside and focus on a specific point.
Now you just have to print at the right moment. But you have the advantage in a marathon that you can practice in a lot of people. So, get to the bacon!
What you need to keep in mind when you shoot motifs that move fast, you'll also find in our contribution to the shutter speed.

# 6 WHEN YOU GET CLOSE TO YOUR SUBJECT - MACRO RECORDINGS

In macro photography, you often have very little depth of focus. This also means that you have to work with the focus very precisely.
Suppose you have a spider in front of your lens and instead of the spider is the ladder on which she sits. Annoying, right?
In situations like this one, it is worthwhile to switch off the autofocus and to manually focus on the most important thing in the picture.

# 7 IF YOUR MOTIVE IS TERRIBLE

Animals are terrible, especially in the wilderness. In addition, they have a genuinely sensitive hearing and are allergic to loud noises.
And no matter how good your car is, it always makes noise. If you do not want to take the risk, turn it off.

# 8 IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PHOTOS THROUGH SOMETHING

With me are then mostly window, z. B. in an airplane or just recently when I was in Istanbul wanted to photograph the Blue Mosque from the windows of the Hagia Sophia.
The autofocus is often overstrained and focused on the window and not on the motif behind it. The same can happen when you are photographing through a semi-transparent curtain or fence. This is often the only way to display the autofocus.
My tip: Scan with the largest possible aperture (ie smaller f-number) and try as close to the fence to go off or durchzufotografieren through a hole. With a bit of luck you will not even see it in the picture.

WHEN DO YOU SWITCH OFF THE AUTOFOCUS? DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
